On 3 July, the University of Edinburgh conferred on Professor Laurens Winkel of Rotterdam and Professor Daniel Visser of Cape Town the honorary degree of LL.D., doctor of laws. This took place as part of the annual graduation ceremony for law students. Over many years both Professor Winkel and Professor Visser have had  strong links with the University of Edinburgh, as well as being good friends. Indeed the last time your blogger was in Cape Town he and Professor Winkel enjoyed the pleasure of being Professor Visser’s guest for dinner. After the graduation, there was a black-tie dinner in honour of the honorary graduates hosted by the Principal in the University’s Raeburn Room. It was an excellent event, and on Thursday 4 July, there was a small informal conference in honour of Professor Winkel held on the premises of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, followed by a casual dinner.
